Princess walked around to my side, we interlocked arms and proceeded into Matt’s. Once inside, there was a short waiting period since we arrived prior to our reservation time. Several minutes later we were seated and Princess immediately unwrapped the bottle of wine. The entrée attendant listed their specials for the day. A female seated next to us was partaking in what appeared to be a delicious 20oz Porterhouse steak. Princess glanced at it and her mind was immediately made up. I selected to start with short rib ravioli followed by a grilled chicken breast dinner.
As we sat there we caught up on the past few weeks. She told me about another guy she spent time with recently, friends she hung out with and showed me a zebra carved cork she received as a gift. Our conversation, like always, went without a quiet minute. We enjoyed our wine and shortly after received our meals. Her steak was all of 20oz. She ordered it rare, which is my favorite way too, so I had to at least try a bite. Near the end of our meal it became clear Princes s had something on her mind; something she didn’t seem like she wanted to say, so I probably didn’t want to hear. Her eyes began to water as she fought back her words. She excused herself from the table and went to the restroom to regain her composure. After returning to the table, Princess was still stricken with emotion. The tears began to flow and I knew this was our end. I excused myself to use the restroom, mostly to give her some more privacy. When I returned, I paid the bill and we proceeded to leave. We walked outside and the tension was thick. She grabbed me tight and held my hand firm. Princess kept justifying her decision to end things with me. I joked before with her about it, but I never saw it coming; not like this and not so soon.
We got to the car and sat inside. We engaged in what I thought was our final embrace. That’s when she laid it on me. Princess wrote me a poem, which she meant to be cute, but it came across much worse than that. Out of emotion, I threw her card, got out of the car, and took a minute to clear my head. That was it, no more us. The morning phone calls, late night talks, us making jokes about our future and how we’d raise kids; over, no more. I got back in the car and had nothing to say. I looked at her one more time and began to drive her home. We arrived at her house and exchanged our last few words. One more embrace; it was over.
I drove back to PA, thinking of our time together. We spoke on the phone for a little then I headed to my favorite place to clear my head. I laid in my vehicle, looking at the stars just thinking. I ended up falling asleep while there and woke up right before 6am. I drove home, got a shower and crawled in bed. I hoped it was a dream, but I knew it wasn’t. Princess called me in the morning. Our new found separation didn’t seem to sit well with her either. I agreed to give her space and never change my phone number just in case she changed her mind.
I can never express how truly amazing Princess really is. I will never forget the times we shared, conversations we had, or laughs we enjoyed. I will miss her.
So this will be my last posting, goodbye “less than 3”
