My mom told me the following story today (9/12/11):
One of the secretaries at work today was all smiles. I said to her, “You must have had a great weekend. She said, “Yeah, I got married.” I asked her if it was a surprise. She said, “Kind of. We weren’t even engaged, we just did it.” I said, “That’s something my daughter would do. I wouldn’t be surprised if I came home one day and she said, “Hey mom, I got married today.”

As it turns out, over the past almost 27 years, I’ve done so much to shock my conservative, straight-edge mother that almost nothing I do surprises her anymore. For example, preceding my weekend adventure to Martha’s Vineyard with a strange man, I texted her, “I’m going out after work.” (At that point, I didn’t know where this guy was taking me.) The next morning the following text exchange ensued between my madre and me:
8:08 a.m. Mom: How are you?
8:17 a.m. Me: Good. I went on a trip. How are you?
8:18 am. Mom: I am good. Trip to where?
8:19 a.m. Me: Massachusetts
8:20 a.m. Mom: Did you drive? When r u coming back?
8:21 a.m. Me: No, I did not drive. Tomorrow.
8:23 a.m. Mom: Are you ok?
8:24 a.m. Me: Yes, I am fine. I am in Martha’s Vineyard.
8:25 a.m. Mom: Ok. God be with you.
8:25 a.m. Me: And also with you.
8:27 a.m. Mom: Would like to hear your voice when you can.
So, I called her. She asked how I got to Massachusetts and who I was with. I told her by small plane with an online dating guy. I expected at least a brief lecture. No such luck. She told me to be careful and have fun.
